Skills Exam (Driving)

We also offer the SKills Exam at South Sound Driving School. The Skills Exam will test your knowledge of the rules of the road and your ability to drive safely. On the Skills Exam, you will make at least two lane changes, go through at least three traffic lights, go through at least three stop signs, perform the starting maneuver, back around the corner, hill park, and parallel park. (More than this may occur on the exam as well.)

The Skills Exam costs $75 if you are using a South Sound Driving School vehicle, $60 if you use your own vehicle, and $40 if you are a student at South Sound Driving School. If using your own vehicle, it must have valid registration, insurance, and all parts of the vehicle must be in working order.

Videos will be provided below to help you prepare for what will be on the Skills Exam.

Pre-Test

During the pre-test, we will check your ability to stop in an emergency situation, make sure you know your hand signals and make sure everything on the car is working properly.

Parallel Parking

During the parallel parking maneuver, we will test your ability to park in between two vehicles. You will need to reverse behind a vehicle and end up within 12 inches of the curb. Make sure to use proper vision when reversing and when you re-enter traffic. Proper vision in reverse is looking out the back of the vehicle at least 50% of the time. Checking your mirrors and blind spots is also recommended while parallel parking.

When re-entering traffic, make sure to signal, check your middle mirror, side mirror, and over your shoulder in the direction you intend to drive.

Hill Parking

During the hill parking maneuver, we will test your ability to safely park a vehicle on a hill. You will need to get within 12 inches of the curb or side of the road if there is no curb. You will also need to engage the parking gear, apply the parking brake, and turn the steering wheel the correct direction. Please use the guide to the right to see which direction to turn the wheel.

When re-entering traffic, make sure to signal, check your middle mirror, side mirror, and over your shoulder in the direction you intend to drive.

Backing Around a Corner

During the backing maneuver, we will test your ability to reverse the vehicle safely. Backing around a corner is to simulate backing out of a driveway. You will need to use proper vision, which is looking out back at least 50% of the time. You will also need to utilize your side mirrors to see how close to the side of the road you are. You will be required to stay within 18 inches of the side of the road the whole time. Stopping before the crosswalk/edge of the road is also required. This will allow you to look both ways and see if there are any pedestrians crossing the road.

When re-entering traffic, make sure to signal, check your middle mirror, side mirror, and over your shoulder in the direction you intend to drive.

Lane Changes

We will require you to make at least two lane changes during the skills exam. You will need to use proper vision to make sure it is safe to make your lane change. Make sure to check your middle mirror, side mirror, and blind spot in the direction you intend to move. Also, make sure no other vehicles are in your way.
