Washington Driver Training Permit Process

Getting your instruction permit is one of the first steps toward earning your Washington State driver license.

Before applying for a permit, students must first pre-apply through the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) License eXpress system. During the pre-application process, students will create a License eXpress account and receive a Washington Driver License (WDL) number.

Once the WDL number has been issued, it must be provided to South Sound Driving School. Students who are enrolled in a Washington State-approved driver training course may be eligible to obtain their instruction permit no sooner than 10 days before their class begins.

Students who are 15½ years old or older may also qualify for an instruction permit by successfully passing the Washington State Knowledge Exam.

After receiving an instruction permit, students can begin practicing their driving skills with a licensed driver (5 years experience) while completing the classroom, observation, and behind-the-wheel portions of their driver training program.

Permit Steps:

  1. Sign up for a Driver Training Class at South Sound Driving School.
  2. Create a License eXpress account.
  3. Receive a Washington Driver License (WDL) number.
  4. Provide your WDL number to South Sound Driving School.
  5. Obtain your instruction permit up to 10 days before class begins.
  6. Begin your driver training program and start building safe driving skills.
