Washington Skills Exam: What to Expect
The skills exam is the driving test you take before getting your Washington driver license. South Sound Driving School is a State Approved testing location in Lacey, serving Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater. Skills exams are by appointment.
Who Can Take It
You must pass the knowledge exam first and bring a valid photo ID. If you are under 18, you must also complete a driver training course.
What's Tested
An examiner rides with you and scores how safely and legally you drive, including:
- Leaving the curb and re-entering traffic
- Vehicle control: pedals, steering and speed
- Lane use, signaling and following distance
- Traffic signs and signals
- Intersections and right of way
- Smooth stops and an emergency stop
- Backing up, including backing out of a driveway or alley
- Parking on a hill
- Parallel parking
- Arm signals
Automatic Fails
Any of these ends the test with a fail, no matter your score:
- Breaking a traffic law. For example, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, or before turning right on red.
- Speeding 6 mph or more over the speed limit.
- The examiner has to step in, either taking control or telling you to stop to avoid hitting something.
- A collision.
- Two tires off the roadway.
Testing in Your Own Car
Your car must be in good working condition. Bring:
- Proof of insurance showing the policy holder, the vehicle and the dates it is valid
- Valid registration, tabs and plates
The examiner checks the brake lights, turn signals, seat belts, parking brake, mirrors, windshield and doors, and the wipers, headlights and defroster if they are needed. Only you and the examiner are allowed in the car.

If You Don't Pass
You can retest as soon as the next day, if we have an opening. Call (360) 209-2195 to book. If you want more practice first, a private lesson is a good way to work on the parts that gave you trouble.
After You Pass
Your passing score is good for one year. First-time drivers under 25 also need to pass the state’s free work zone course before getting a license.

How long is the Washington skills exam?
About 20 minutes.
What score do I need to pass?
At least 80 out of 100 points, with no automatic fails.
Can I use my own car?
Yes. It is $65 in your own car. Bring proof of insurance, and make sure your registration, tabs, plates and lights are all current and working. You can also test in our car for $80.
Can a parent ride along?
No. Only you and the examiner are allowed in the car.
If I fail, when can I retest?
As soon as the next day, if we have an opening.
Do I need to pass the knowledge exam first?
Yes. You must pass the knowledge exam before you can take the skills exam.
